For 5 months starting from December to July 2009 a great propaganda campaign among citizens was conducted where the idea of volunteering as an instrument of social development was promoted.
On the posters, billboards and during the presentations in High schools of the city all citizens of Donetsk and other towns of the region were invited to join the volunteer team that was going to take part in the 8th European Football Championship – EURO U19 2009.
In July and August during the European Championship 653 volunteers were involved in 4 directions: information center volunteers, profile service volunteers, hostess volunteers, reception committee volunteers.
Experts of Volunteer Agency, EURC “Social Partnership” helped the Department of Science and Education of the Donetsk region administration to recruit volunteers and conduct trainings for them.
Daria, one of the volunteers, shares her impressions of working during the Championship:
“Presently I can say that my participation in Euro 2009 was one of the brightest events in my live! I even could not image that everything would be that grandly and I would get such a splendid opportunity to meet people from all over Europe! But also I realized - to get such opportunities one must not be just a volunteer, but an active volunteer, diligent, creative, and should make all possible efforts to show your city in the most favorable light. An experience that I have got throughout 2 weeks of the Championship is equal to 5 years of school studying!
Organizers of the tournament served us, volunteers, as an excellent example and we got a chance to improve our communication skills every day! It’s a pity that everything quickly comes to the end, but now I am waiting impatiently for Euro 2012. I was inspired by the Championship and after its conclusion I’m going to start learning the second foreign language.”
